Senior Consultant – Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesia & ECMO Services
Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata | Co-Director, ECMO Program
ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a life-support technology that takes over the work of the heart and lungs when they fail — even when a ventilator is not enough. It circulates blood outside the body, adds oxygen, removes CO₂, and returns it — giving the organs time to heal or bridging a patient to transplant. During COVID-19, ECMO became a game-changer for severely ill patients across India.
Dr. Arpan Chakraborty is one of India's most distinguished ECMO Physicians and Critical Care Specialists with over 20 years of clinical experience. He is the Senior Consultant in Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesia & ECMO Services at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata, and serves as Co-Director of the ECMO Program — one of Eastern India's largest and most advanced.
He served as President of the ECMO Society of India in 2019 and is the Founder Member of ECMO Kolkata — an initiative to bring ECMO awareness and access across the region. With over 400 ECMO cases and 50+ ECMO retrievals and long-distance transports across India, Dr. Chakraborty is the go-to expert for the most complex cardiac and respiratory emergencies.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Chakraborty was at the frontlines managing critically ill patients on ECMO when ventilators alone failed — achieving life-saving outcomes in what appeared to be impossible situations. His expertise extends to Heart Transplants, Lung Transplants, ECPR, LVAD, CRRT, and all forms of extracorporeal therapy.
He is an accomplished international academic with publications in top journals, a sought-after speaker at global ECMO conferences (Riyadh, Taiwan), and a mentor who has trained ECMO programs at IPGMER Kolkata and Cuttack Medical College.
A 44-year-old senior executive at Bharat Earth Movers Limited was placed on ECMO support for a record 90 days at Apollo Kolkata following severe COVID-19 complications. Under Dr. Chakraborty's care, the patient overcame the infection and post-COVID complications and was discharged in good health — a landmark case reported widely in Indian media.
"The best pulmonologist in the city. Arpan Sir completely healed my mother. If you have any kind of lungs issue, kindly visit him without any second thoughts." — Verified Patient, Apollo 247
Dr. Chakraborty communicates fluently in Bengali, Hindi, and English — ensuring patients and families from Tripura and Northeast India are fully informed and comfortable throughout their care.
